About This Material
Framing nails are the primary fastener used to assemble wood-frame structures. The standard framing nail is the 16d (3.5-inch) sinker or common nail, used for face-nailing studs through plates and connecting structural members. Pneumatic framing nailers use stick (21-degree, 28-degree, or 30-degree) or coil nails ranging from 3.1 to 3.5 inches in length. Nail types include bright (uncoated), vinyl-coated (sinkers, for easier driving), hot-dipped galvanized (for exterior and PT lumber), and stainless steel (for coastal and corrosive environments). A 30-pound box of 16d sinkers contains approximately 500 nails. Hand-drive nails are available but rarely used in modern framing due to the speed advantage of pneumatic nailers. The IRC prescribes a specific nailing schedule for each framing connection — for example, two 16d nails per stud end through the plate, and three 16d nails per rim joist connection. Framing nails cost $40 to $60 per 30-pound box, or $30 to $50 per case of collated strip nails for pneumatic guns.
